Fountain Square Celebrates the Grand Opening of The Brass Ring Lounge The Fountain Square Cultural District announces the opening of The Brass Ring Lounge, an intimate cocktail lounge, restaurant and music venue. The atmosphere is relaxed, and everyone is welcome. “It’s like an extension of a cocktail party you might have at your house,” said Dawn Burgin, co-owner of the establishment with her husband, Scott. Located in the former Fountain Tavern, the building was completely gutted and rebuilt by the Burgins. The transformation is nothing short of spectacular. The entire place has been outfitted to feel like a vintage lounge, “to capture to spirit of clubs like the Copacabana, back when people used to go out for the evening,” said Dawn Burgin. The Brass Ring Lounge joins a string of one-of-a-kind drinking, dining and entertainment establishments in Fountain Square, including Radio Radio, Sam’s Saloon, Santorini Greek Kitchen, Luxor and Smokehouse on Shelby. For the near future, the Burgins will present local musicians Cathy Morris and Darryl Spurlock as the house band. “We’ll start with music on Saturday night, and consider additional music nights if it proves popular,” said Scott. Regular hours will be Monday through Thursday from 4 p.m. to midnight and Friday and Saturday from 4 p.m. to 3 a.m. The name for the new bar is taken from the practice of awarding a prize to carousel riders who grabbed a ring made of brass as they passed a special holder. A brass ring has come to represent a goal that is achieved with persistence, skill and a little luck. “This has been our dream,” said Dawn Burgin, “and creating and opening this place was our brass ring.” Just two blocks south of the fountain at 1245 South Shelby Street, there is plenty of free parking in the building’s lot, or across the street in the Fountain Square public parking lot.
